Robert Kirkman Praises Unconventional Structure of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers Infinity War Avengers 4 Marvel StudiosRobert Kirkman, the creator of comics such as The Walking Dead and Invincible, recently opened up about why he loved the unconventional story structure of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War.

The Avengers was an unprecedented blockbuster that took the box office by storm in 2012. The film’s success was a major surprise because nothing quite like that had been done at the time. The film was less about deep storytelling and more about taking the heroes of the MCU and throwing them into a film that was essentially a two-hour splash panel.  What made the success of the film even more shocking was that the previous entries of the franchise, Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor, made good money but weren’t as huge as Iron Man or Iron Man 2.

Six years later, Marvel once again one-upped themselves by delivering Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year. Infinity War featured even less catching-up and world-building than appeared in the first film. It was truly a season finale instead of its own story and for fans of the franchise, it seems that’s exactly what they wanted. One notable comic book icon who loved Marvel’s approach to the film is none other than The Walking Dead comic creator Robert Kirkman. While speaking on Smodcast, Kirkman opened up about his love for the ambitious event movie that was Avengers: Infinity War.

“There’s no recap. There’s no explanation as to who anyone is. You sit down in the movie and they’re just like ‘guess what? You’ve earned this. We’re at like movie 21 now and here we f****** go’ and you’re like ‘oh my god! Like this is so great!'”

Fans can check out the entire episode of Smodcast here. Marvel’s latest assembling of Earth’s mightiest heroes blew up the box office earlier this summer, right after Black Panther had done very similar success. Avengers: Infinity War was a huge event but now that fans have been teased by the film’s heart-breaking cliffhanger of an ending, Avengers 4 is gearing up to be one of the most anticipated movies of next year. I’m sorry to see this movie get bad reviews. I enjoyed the first one, and have read several Jack Reacher novels that I thought were great. Reacher is essentially Captain America without super powers. Reacher is even over six feet tall and blond in the novels.

I really enjoyed the first one as well. But this one is just too stylized for my taste.
