Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo have revealed when they’ll return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After ending Phase three with a bang, Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo are working on smaller films and running their own production company, AGBO. While they’re busy editing Cherry starring Tom Holland and promoting Extraction, which stars Chris Hemsworth and is currently streaming on Netflix, the duo recently spoke with Esquire regarding their future with Marvel.

Working on two of the biggest films of all time is certainly a heavy burden, and while they’re busy on their own personal projects, Joe Russo is certain that they’ll return to the Marvel universe if there’s something worthwhile for them.

“We adore Kevin, Lou, Victoria [Alonso] and everyone at Marvel, and we’re always looking for another opportunity to work together. When the right one comes along, I’m sure we’ll all go make it.”

Anthony Russo continued this sentiment but also revealed that the reason why the duo was able to be so successful with the Avengers films was because they weren’t thinking about the future of the MCU.

“One of the reasons we were able to do what we did with both Infinity War and Endgame is because we were not thinking about the future of the MCU at all. We had complete and utter focus on closing out the road that had been travelled that far, in the most spectacular, emotionally fulfilling, cathartic, surprising way we could think of. That was our job on those movies. I think we wouldn’t have been able to do what we did with those movies had we been thinking about where the MCU goes from here. We spent it all on those movies, in terms of what we could do as storytellers.”

Well, it sounds like their future at Marvel can only prosper if it’s something that hasn’t have a set of rules attached to it. Joe and Anthony Russo began their careers in independent cinema, so it makes sense that they don’t like to be beholden to any agenda. Now that the Avengers directors have the resources, they get to create and produce their own projects, separate from Marvel.
