  • I hope that one day the lawyers from Fox, Sony, Paramount, and Marvel all come together to explain how this all works and who owns what and why. I would watch that movie.

Sammy?? Nappy?? What BS do you want to add to this article?

  • Rob

So Fox really blew that one. If they knew that Marvel really needed Ego for GOTG2, they could have asked for the world.

    • Steve Steve

It doesn’t sound like Fox knew. Gunn said Fox came to Marvel asking for a trade. Perhaps Fox was in a similar boat, where Negasonic Teenage Warhead was the perfect character for Deadpool.

I can’t imagine the Fox executives even knew who Ego was, let alone that they owned his rights.

      • Rob

Except that Fox never expected Deadpool to be a big movie. GOTG2 is a tentpole movie. Fox definitely had the leverage if they knew that Gunn had no back up plan.

        • Steve Steve

Who’s to say Fox knew Ego was destined for GOTG2?

Perhaps you are right, but pushing leverage to maximize return is not always the best strategy. Fox has a storied rivalry with Marvel (the business leaders anyway). Perhaps this was an opportunity for the creative teams (who reportedly get along quite well) to bridge that rivalry and take a step towards bigger deals.

        • Axxell

Perhaps Fox thought they were getting the better deal. I mean, between a planet with a talking face and a character named Negasonic Teenage Warhead…I’d think Marvel got a raw deal as is.
