Was Doctor Doom always the plan?

Was Doctor Doom always going to be the big bad? A new rumor reveals how the Avengers saga changed following Kang the Conqueror’s outing from the MCU.

The story of Avengers: Kang Dynasty will go down as one of the biggest “What If’s” in MCU history. The project was set to be part one of a two-part culmination to the multiverse saga, with multiple movies and shows building up the event. However, following Jonathan Majors’ ousting from the role of Kang the Conqueror, the studio made a massive pivot to bring Doctor Doom in as the new big bad of the saga.

Not much is known about the original plants for Kang the Conqueror in Avengers: Kang Dynasty. However, a new rumor from Alex Perez at the Cosmic Circus does shed some light on what the plan might have been. According to the scooper, the Avengers were supposed to fight three variants of Kang the Conqueror, before completing the MCU’s time loop with He Who Remains.

“Separate Avengers teams divided as they took on Immortus, Centurion and Rama-Tut. The Conqueror returns in the third act from ‘The Beyond’ to take his revenge against his variants and become the new He Who Remains.”

Was Doctor Doom In Avengers: Kang Dynasty?

This rumor perked the ears up of many fans. Namely since, despite Avengers: Kang Dynasty always leading into Secret Wars, there was no mention of Doctor Doom. According to Alex Perez, this was on purpose. Continuing the rumor, the scooper revealed that Doctor Doom was supposed to be the villain of the next saga, but plans had to be changed once Kang the Conqueror fell through.

“The idea was to leave Doom out of it because He Who Remains and his variants all agreed on keeping Doom (and others) out of the picture in order to ensure they’d thrive. And when they’d lose, Doom would have been teased as the “evil” they were trying to keep at bay.”

“Now, you’re getting the aftermath of what would have basically been the next Saga, but with Doom at the forefront instead of Kang mixed in with a couple of ideas from previous scripts.”

It’s interesting to hear that, if Kang the Conqueror had never left his post from the Avengers films, Marvel always planned to make Doctor Doom the big bad of the MCU. Likely, the studio was talking to Robert Downey Jr. for the role before Avengers: Kang Dynasty ever become Doomsday. It’s certainly an interesting rumor to mull over, especially as production on the next Avengers film ramps up in the next few weeks.
