Paramount is developing a new film in the world of Cloverfield with J.J. Abrams producing via Bad Robot and Babak Anvari coming on board to direct.

The announcement comes following the success of Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick. The film will mark the first new entry in the Cloverfield franchise since 2018’s The Cloverfield Paradox, which premiered on Netflix. Joining Anvari and Abrams is Joe Barton, who will pen the script.

Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen are also attached as producers, while Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard are joining the project as executive producers.

Return To Cloverfield

Details of Babak Anvari’s new Cloverfield project are being kept under wraps, meaning it is not yet clear if the film is a direct Cloverfield sequel or a new spin-off in the vein of previous entries 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox.

Babak Anvari previously directed the 2016 horror film Under the Shadow and served as executive producer on the Hulu original series Monsterland. He has more recently directed I Came By for Netflix, which stars George Mackay, Kelly Macdonald and Hugh Bonneville.

The original Cloverfield was directed by Matt Reeves, who is executive producing the new entry. J.J. Abrams has served as producer on all of the Cloverfield films, so it is not surprising to see him back for the upcoming installment of the franchise.

The last two Cloverfield films were developed under different titles and not revealed to be part of the Cloverfield universe until their respective marketing campaigns began.

Orbiting a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis, and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality.

The film was directed by Julius Onah and stars Gug Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo and Daniel Brühl.
