Barbara Broccoli, co-producer of the James Bond movies, has shared an update on when the next film in the series, which will introduce Daniel Craig’s 007 replacement, is likely to begin filming.
Last year’s No Time To Die marked Daniel Craig’s final appearance as James Bond, a role he first took on in 2006’s Casino Royale. Craig’s first appearance as Bond was a bold one, serving as an origin story for a rebooted version of the character. His final appearance was no less shocking, breaking new ground as the first Bond film to kill off 007. An ending like that raises more than a few questions over where the franchise can possibly go next and it sounds like the series’ producers aren’t rushing into anything.
A New Bond For A New Era
With a line drawn under Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are apparently looking to rediscover who James Bond is in a fresh take on the franchise. This means time is being dedicated to deciding where the series will go before a script is written, an actor cast, or filming begins.
Speaking about the Bond series’ new direction recently, Barbara Broccoli disclosed that filming was unlikely to begin for at least two years and confirmed the process of choosing a new Bond is yet to begin. The producer revealed:
“Nobody’s in the running. We’re working out where to go with him, we’re talking that through. There isn’t a script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away.”
It sounds like fans of James Bond have a bit of a wait ahead of them before the character returns to screens. However, this will hopefully allow the franchise sufficient time to move on from Daniel Craig’s portrayal of 007 and let a new interpretation stand on its own, outside the shadow cast by No Time To Die‘s shocking ending to Bond’s story.
Here is the synopsis for No Time to Die:
