Batgirl comic book writer Gail Simone has endorsed Karen Gillan as Barbara Gordon on Twitter.

A live-action Batgirl film has been long-gestating at Warner Bros. but no news has come out regarding the Barbara Gordon film in quite some time. As the DC Extended Universe continues to expand and become more inclusive, it’s almost certain that fans will see a Batgirl film featuring Barbara Gordon. In fact, we previously reported that Warner Bros. is currently looking for a director to take on the Batgirl project. As always, rumors and fan casts continue to dominate the industry, but it’s always interesting when the creative honchos behind some of our favorite projects endorse actors for the characters they helped write stories for.

In this case, Batgirl writer Gail Simone has endorsed Karen Gillan to star as Barbara Gordon should the DCEU ever be interested in bringing the iconic Batgirl to the big screen. Gail Simone took to Twitter to endorse Karen Gillan as Barbara Gordon, and you can check out her comments below.

Gail Simone’s endorsement of Karen Gillan as Barbara Gordon comes after the Guardians of the Galaxy star was asked which superhero she would like to play. Pretty straightforward with her answer, Karen Gillan announced that she’d love to explore the character of Barbara Gordon, a.k.a Batgirl. One of Batgirl’s most popular and long-running writers, Gail Simone’s seal of approval was enough to get Karen Gillan excited as well. Karen Gillan responded to Gail Simone’s tweet with pure elation, saying how cool the whole scenario was.

Currently, the Batgirl film set to focus on Barbara Gordon is looking for a director. Karen Gillan is expected to reprise her role as Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, so it would be weird if she also played DC’s Batgirl, but stranger things have happened. It’s certainly exciting that Gail Simone has given Karen Gillan the seal of approval to take on the role of Barbara Gordon, so now let’s just wait and see when the Batgirl film begins casting.

In the meantime, if you’re looking to see a female-led DC film featuring characters from Batman, check out the next month’s Birds of Prey. Here’s the official synopsis for that movie:

“You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.”

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ali Wong, Robert Catrini, and Michael Masini have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

Birds of Prey will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
