Batman: Anne Hathaway Thought Catwoman Audition Was For Harley Quinn

Anne Hathaway originally thought that her audition in the 2012 Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises was for Harley Quinn and not Catwoman.

The 2012 Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises will forever live in the shadow of its predecessor, The Dark Knight, but was a successful superhero film none the less. The film currently holds an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is the most financially successful Batman film to date, having earned over $1B at the worldwide box office, beating out its predecessor by roughly $70M. However, one of its most critical stars thought she was playing a different character altogether.

In the Batman film, Anne Hathaway played Catwoman but was only ever referred to as her real name, Selina Kyle. In the film, she went back and forth as an ally and antagonist before helping Batman take down Bane and Talia al Ghul in the film’s final act. The last we saw of her, she was apparently peacefully living out her life with Bruce Wayne in Florence. But, as it turned out, Anne Hathaway originally thought she was playing a different character altogether.

While speaking to Movie Web, Anne Hathaway revealed the outfit that she was wearing when she took a meeting with director Christopher Nolan and how she was trying to give off Harley Quinn vibes:

“I came in and I had this lovely Vivian Westwood kind of beautiful-but-mad tailoring top with stripes going everywhere. And I wore these flat Joker-ey looking shoes. And I was trying to give Chris these crazy little smiles.”

She then revealed her reaction when the Batman director revealed that the role he had in mind for her was, in fact, not Harley Quinn but Catwoman:

“About an hour into the meeting he said ‘Well, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this, but it’s Catwoman.’ And I was shifting into a different gear. ‘Now ok, we’re slinky. We’re slinky. And I hate my shirt. I love my shirt, but I hate it right now. We’re slinky.'”

What do you all make of Anne Hathaway’s comments? Would she have been better suited to Harley Quinn as opposed to Catwoman? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Catwoman will be portrayed by Zoe Kravitz in the upcoming Matt Reeves film, The Batman. Full plot details on the film are currently under wraps, though the film will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and features a Rogues’ Gallery of villains that includes Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler. Following the Caped Crusader during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector, The Batman will also make use of the hero’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous live-action adaptations. It is currently unknown what role Catwoman will play in the upcoming film.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.

The Batman is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on October 1, 2021.
