Batman Is Still Off-Limits To The CW’s Arrowverse

Elseworlds Arrowverse Batwoman Smallville Batman Batwoman Gotham

The Elseworlds event is underway and fans are noticing more things from DC Comics coming into light, but Batman remains off-limits.

When Arrow made its debut, Batman was not allowed to even be mentioned on the show. Now that has all changed. The latest chapter of the crossover event had the heroes reference the iconic hero by name. This solidifies that the Caped Crusader exists in The Arrowverse. Caroline Dries, who wrote Monday’s Arrow episode and is developing the Batwoman pilot, had this to say on the matter.

“DC doesn’t let you say ‘Batman,’ [or] have anything about Gotham City, Now, all of a sudden, you can do stuff. For a bunch of geeks like us, you’re in heaven.”

Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz added:

“We tried, so many times. It was kind of shocking.”

Oliver Queen has never been one to believe in Batman. Schwartz opened up a bit about the reasoning behind this.

“We introduce him as being the first vigilante so it was kind poking fun at that a little bit, and him being very defensive.”

Even though the Dark Knight has been hinted at on the series, it is very unlikely we will see him anytime soon. While the powers that be have opened the DC Comics vault wider than ever before, some things still have to remain locked away. Elseworlds concludes with Supergirl and it will be interesting to see what other epic DC things are thrown in the mix.

The “Elseworlds” crossover event concludes tonight with a new episode of Supergirl at 8 P.M. on the CW.
