The third and final chapter of the Elseworlds crossover may have revealed plot points for the planned Batwoman series.
During the final moments of the Elseworlds crossover, Oliver Queen received a phone call from Batwoman, who asked if the recently incarcerated John Deegan would be a bigger problem. The masked vigilante explains that Deegan, a.k.a Doctor Destiny, has made a new friend in Arkham Asylum and viewers immediately learn that the DC villain Psycho-Pirate has been placed in a cell next to the disfigured doctor. Some have taken the reveal as an indication that Batwoman series will involve both villains and Psycho-Pirate has previously unleashed chaos on Gotham City in the DC Rebirth comics.
In the comics, Psycho-Pirate became a menace to Batwoman’s home city after being sent to Gotham with Hugo Strange as part of Amanda Waller’s Task Force-X. Deviating from the planned mission, Strange uses Psycho-Pirate to infect the heroes known as Gotham and Gotham Girl, causing the former to go on a murderous rampage. After Strange trades Psycho-Pirate to Bane, who hopes to use the villain to overcome his childhood trauma and addiction to Venom, Batman enlists a team to rescue Psycho-Pirate and later uses the villain to undo the emotional turmoil he inflicted on Gotham Girl.
Of course, the conclusion of Elseworlds leads directly into the Crisis on Infinite Earth‘s announcement, suggesting the villains will be involved in the next crossover event, though this could be because there is no certainty that Batwoman solo series will be picked up.
The official logline for the series reads as follows:
Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.
The project will be written by Caroline Dries, who also serves as an executive-producing alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecht, and Geoff Johns.
