The Ben Affleck version of Batman made an appearance in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
This weekend, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers dropped exclusively on Disney Plus. The film, which is somewhat based on the original Disney Afternoon cartoon of the same name, is a Roger Rabbit-style riff on studios’ obsession with intellectual properties. The film is filled with numerous easter eggs and references to other cartoons and IP’s, with some surprising appearances from characters Disney doesn’t even own. In one scene, a film titled Batman vs. E.T. finds Ben Affleck‘s version of the Caped Crusader facing off against the lovable Extra-Terrestrial from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 masterpiece.
Yes, you read that right. Ben Affleck‘s version of Batman appears in a film-within-a-film in which he faces off against E.T.
Why this Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers’ Batman easter egg works.
The inclusion of Ben Affleck’s Batman in this film is not only surprising due to the fact that it was even added at all, but the fact that it showcases how ridiculous much of Hollywood’s obsession with IP is. Given that the film features numerous characters from different studios, this is reminiscent of when Who Framed Roger Rabbit? featured characters like Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse onscreen together. Clearly, these were just little cameos, but it would certainly be fun to see this lead to a potential collaboration between Disney and Warner Bros. for a Marvel/DC crossover in the future.
Here is the synopsis for the new Disney Plus film, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers:
In “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (voice of Sandberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.
