The SnyderVerse era has officially come to a close following the ‘Full Circle’ event which screened all of Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe films, including his cut of Justice League. During the event, Batman actor Ben Affleck reflected on Snyder’s skills as a filmmaker during production.
After seven long years and no film to call his own, Ben Affleck will hang up the mantle of Batman when he makes his final appearance as the Dark Knight in The Flash. As his time with the role comes to a close, Affleck reflected on his work with Zack Snyder at the ‘Full Circle’ event, honoring the achievements of the SnyderVerse and raising money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He specifically praised Snyder’s intuitive sense as a filmmaker, saying it’s a skill that can’t be taught:
“As you look at all these actors who Zack cast and how good they are and what they’ve gone on to do, it’s a testament to Zack’s taste. And his taste is very, as he says, intuitive. I don’t know if you can learn it or teach it. He has a feeling if he is, sort of, being like a filmmaker with a point of view is.”
Ben Affleck also praised Zack Snyder’s confidence when it comes to his craft. Not just in execution, but regarding how other people see his works like Justice League:
“As soon as he sees that thing that bounces off him, it’s very wonderful to work with someone who’s not clouded by a bunch of other thoughts or opinions or ‘What are they gonna say? What are they gonna do? How many followers do they have?’ Whatever it is, immediately, and listen, he has an opinion, and he has a strong one.”
This candidness of Zack Snyder is refreshing to many in the film industry, including Ben Affleck. In a world of fandoms and contracts and NDAs, sometimes show business feels more like the circus business:
“And that’s kind of what you want as an actor, very much, whether it’s good or bad. ‘Are we doing this or are we doing that? You want me for the movie or you don’t?’ You know what I mean? Both are fine, I just want to know, let’s not do 15 auditions and do a whole circus.”
While much more can be said about the state of Hollywood and any one person’s opinions on it, the power of Zack Snyder’s filmmaking comes down to one thing: He’s a likeable guy. If his Justice League Snyder Cut fanbase is anything to go by, people just enjoy rallying behind him. This is a sentiment expressed by Ben Affleck himself in his closing statements on the matter:
“And that’s one of the beautiful things about Zack and his process is that he is worked by instinct and decisive and absolutely self-assured of that, and it’s a very calming thing to have in a director, to go ‘OK, he knows where we’re going, so I’m gonna follow him.'”
It’s sadly not likely fans will ever see Zack Snyder return to the world of DC films. However, such a glowing endorsement from Ben Affleck, along with a generally strong reputation amongst his actors and community, assures that he’ll have no lack of work beyond Justice League. Snyder is even set to go cosmic with his upcoming Netflix film Rebel Moon which is set to debut at the end of this year. So while his Snyderverse may have come ‘Full Circle’, it’s by no means the end of the line.
The SnyderVerse era is over for now
The term “SnyderVerse” refers to the interconnected film universe that Zack Snyder created, which began with Man of Steel and continued with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Those plans have been scrapped in favor of an interconnected DC Universe consisting of film, television, animation and video game projects, with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm.
Despite its mixed reception, the SnyderVerse has a dedicated fanbase that appreciates Zack Snyder’s DC Universe vision. Fans have praised the SnyderVerse films for their darker tone and mature storytelling. They have also criticized Warner Bros. and DC’s interference with Snyder’s DCU plans, which they believe resulted in the lackluster final product of Justice League.
In 2021, Zack Snyder released his four-hour long Justice League cut on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. His version of Justice League was well received by fans and critics alike, who praised its improvement over the original version of the movie, which was overseen by Joss Whedon. The release of the Snyder Cut has reignited interest in the SnyderVerse and sparked speculation about its future.
