During an interview with ComicBook.com at CinemaCon 2019, Sonic The Hedgehog star Ben Schwartz discussed how Plastic Man could be DC’s answer to Marvel’s Deadpool.
Ben Schwartz attended CinemaCon 2019 to promote the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog film, but the actor has also openly expressed his interest in portraying Plastic Man in DC’s developing film about the stretching superhero. In fact, Ben Schwartz discussed how he sees Plastic Man as a potentially comedic and morally gray superhero, not unlike Deadpool:
“If you look at the original Plastic Man, he’s a thief, he gets these superpowers, and then he uses his connections with being in the crooked world to aid the police. But in my head, how much fun if he was a thief, got superpowers, and was like, ‘Screw it, I want to keep being crooked.’ But he’s also, if you look at the cartoons or the other iterations of him, he’s funny! He’s so funny. And I think what Ryan Reynolds and Tim Miller did with Deadpool, you could have a funny superhero in DC. Shazam! just did it and I think it’s gonna be great. That’s it, I just love that character a lot. I think I’d get to be goofy if I ever got the chance to do it.”
Warner Bros. has set rising screenwriter Amanda Idoko to pen the script for the Plastic Man film, with the studio reportedly intent on remaining faithful to the silly tone and humor of the DC Comics hero. Meanwhile, Disney Chairman Alan Horn has assured fans there will be more Deadpool projects now that the character is under the House of Mouse umbrella.
The Sonic the Hedgehog film will follow Small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski and Sonic as they embark on a road trip to San Francisco in a race to recover the blue hedgehog’s rings before the villainous Dr. Robotnik.
Directed by Jeff Fowler from a script written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel, Sonic the Hedgehog features the voices talent of Ben Schwartz as the titular character and stars James Marsden as sheriff Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Mrs. Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Stone, Frank C. Turner as Crazy Carl, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Neal McDonough, Debs Howard, and Elfina Luk also star in undisclosed roles.
Sonic the Hedgehog is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 8, 2019.
