Is Doctor Strange finally making his return? A recent interview has Benedict Cumberbatch teasing his return in an upcoming Avengers project.
There’s a lot of big names not yet confirmed to return for the next Avengers film, but perhaps the most notable is Doctor Strange himself. Not only did he play a prominent role in the last two installments, but Benedict Cumberbatch was clearly being set up as a mainstay in the franchise- only to drop off the face of the Earth after his middling sequel.
Luckily, it seems his return may finally be on the horizon. Benedict Cumberbatch recently spoke to Smartless podcast about his future as the Sorcerer Supreme. Of course, the question of if Doctor Strange will appear in the upcoming Avengers movies was broached during the conversation. And while Cumberbatch didn’t explicitly reveal what projects he was signed on for, he did confirm he’ll be filming his return next year.

When Will Benedict Cumberbatch Return As Doctor Strange?
Looking at Marvel’s current slate, there’s only one film on the schedule left to start production: Avengers: Secret Wars. Given that project will be the end of the Multiverse Saga, it makes sense that Doctor Strange would pay a pivotal role. And, thus, Benedict Cumberbatch will likely be tied up for a “huge commitment” during filming.
However, it’s likely Marvel isn’t ONLY releasing an Avengers film in 2027 and early 2028. Some other projects will need to start rolling cameras. And with Benedict Cumberbatch approaching a decade as Doctor Strange, it wouldn’t be shocking for him to film one final solo movie for the character as a send-off to everyone’s favorite Magical Wunderkind.
