‘Doctor Strange 2’: Benedict Cumberbatch Playfully Debunks Tom Cruise Rumors

Don't expect to see the Superior Iron Man in the Doctor Strange sequel.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Illuminati

In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Benedict Cumberbatch teased – and quickly dismissed – Tom Cruise’s rumored appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Since the first details of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange sequel started to emerge, rumors have been running wild concerning potential cameos from across the multiverse. One rumor that has proven particularly prevalent amongst fans suggested that Tom Cruise would be appearing as a variant of Tony Stark, possibly the villainous Superior Iron Man. Cruise had been one of Marvel’s early contenders for the role of Tony Stark in Iron Man, before Robert Downey Jr. was ultimately cast, giving rise to the idea he could cameo as an alternate version of the character.

While on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Benedict Cumberbatch was pressed on any potential cameos audiences could look forward to in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Marvel actor refused to give anything away, but said that he would offer a hint of one other actor appearing in the film. He then started humming the theme tune to Tom Cruise’s Top Gun. However, Cumberbatch quickly denied Cruise’s involvement and offered his apologies to anyone “wanting to see two Tom Cruise films in one month,” in reference to Top Gun: Maverick:

“Well look, I guess I am on the Fallon Show, so maybe… Maybe, Jimmy, I can give you just one clue as to someone who may be in the film, because it’s coming out quite soon. I’m not gonna say their name, but I’ll see if you can guess it from a theme tune of something else that they’ve done that’s quite well known. Ready? [Hums Top Gun theme] … No. Sorry to disappoint the people that have bought their ticket wanting to see two Tom Cruise films in one month…”

It sounds like Cruise will not be bringing Iron Man back to the MCU after all. However, several other Marvel actors are expected to appear in roles from across the multiverse, including Patrick Stewart who is believed to be reprising the role of Professor X from the X-Men movies.
