The first reviews are in for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and it has received an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%.
Rotten Tomatoes announced the early score for the Marvel sequel via Twitter, with its “Fresh” 84% rating based on the initial 56 reviews. The film premiered yesterday, May 2, at the Dolby Theater in LA at a red carpet event attended by director Sam Raimi and the film’s principal cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Xochitl Gomez and Patrick Stewart.
Many early reviews praise director Sam Raimi, whose work on a wealth of horror projects and the genre-defining Spider-Man movies of the noughties make him an ideal choice for a Marvel project of this magnitude. Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen, who reprise their MCU roles of Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch respectively, also receive praise for their performances in this latest Marvel entry.
Our own review for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also highlighted the importance of Sam Raimi’s directorial flair in making the film a success, dubbing it “a magical, and sometimes scary showcase of Raimi’s cinematic sensibilities.” Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as Doctor Strange – his sixth time in the role (not counting his voice work in the animated What If…?), though only his second in a Doctor Strange movie – also earned high praise, dubbed “his most emotionally-satisfying singular film arc in any of his appearances thus far.”
