Concept artist Jerad S. Marantz has revealed a very different design for Dormammu in Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.

Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange concluded with Benedict Cumberbatch’s future Sorcerer Supreme coming face to face with the powerful Dormammu. However, rather than opposing Dormammu in a physical showdown using magic, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange used his wits and the Time Stone to trap the villain in an endless loop until convincing him to cease his plan to destroy Earth.

Now, Doctor Strange concept artist Jerad S. Marantz has shared an early design for Dormammu that was ultimately never used in the final version of the movie. As Marantz explains in the caption, this version of Dormammu was designed when the filmmakers were playing around with the idea of a human-type look for the villain.

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the Doctor Strange sequel is said to be Marvel Studios’ first outright horror film and co-stars Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong are also expected to return.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to hit theaters in the summer of 2021.
