Birds of Prey star Ewan McGregor recently revealed that he found the ritual of taking selfies with fans to be soulless.

Since the advent of the smartphone, interactions with celebrities have radically changed from brief but intimate conversations to rushed selfies. Ewan McGregor, who has starred in his fair share of high-profile films, including the Star Wars prequel trilogy, is always delighted to speak with fans. While he finds interacting with fans to be fruitful, Ewan McGregor, who currently stars in Birds of Prey, recently told Sunday Sitdown that he isn’t the biggest fan of taking selfies with fans.

Whilst discussing his role of Roman Sionis in Birds of Prey, Ewan McGregor brought up how he misses the golden days of interacting with fans, before taking selfies became the norm.

“You stand and you take the photograph and they’re happy and off they go. It’s a soulless thing. There’s no exchange of anything. Before it used to be, ‘Oh I saw you in that movie.’ Even if people didn’t like something, especially in Scotland, I’d get, ‘That movie you were in was sh-t, by the way.’”

The Birds of Prey villain continued by discussing how even if the interaction wasn’t necessarily positive, it would still come from a place of deliberate intent as opposed to selfies.

“At least there was some sort of exchange. But that’s turned into just the selfie now.”

It’s hard not to imagine Birds of Prey star Ewan McGregor constantly getting asked for selfies, especially now that he’s part of the DCEU. Set to reprise his role in the Star Wars universe in an Obi-Wan Kenobi show, Ewan McGregor is probbably dreading the amount of selfies he’ll have to take in the coming years. With Birds of Prey on its way to becoming a cult classic and his character emerging as a fan favorite, Ewan McGregor might not just have a choice in how fans interact with him. Hopefully those who are privy of his lack of interest in the selfie can take the time to engage with the Birds of Prey star on a deeper level should they meet Ewan McGregor.

Here is the official synopsis for Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey:

“You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.”

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ali Wong, Robert Catrini, and Michael Masini have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

Birds of Prey is now playing in theaters.
