DC Comics announced a new ongoing monthly Birds of Prey series featuring Harley Quinn, Black Canary, and Huntress.
The new Birds of Prey comic book series is set to debut in October from writer Brian Azzarello and an art team consisting of Emanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy, and Trish Mulvihill. Artist Emanuela Lupacchino made the following comment on his love for the Birds of Prey and the “craziness” of Harley Quinn:
“I’m thrilled to work on Birds of Prey with Brian Azzarello. The Birds are a super-team I’ve never worked on before but that I‘ve always loved. Harley is shining with her craziness, which is something I love to draw.”
Writer Brian Azzarello made the following statement on what readers can expect from this take on Black Canary and Huntress, especially when Harley Quinn’s presence affects their dynamic:
“It’s cool to have a story to tell about these characters I’ve never worked on before, with Ema, a terrific artist I’ve never worked with before. Having Harley involved screws with the new BOP dynamic—hell, with every dynamic. She’s chaos, but she might be the most together member of the team. Canary, Huntress, and Montoya have a lot of damaged baggage. Ema and I are gonna unpack it.”
The Birds of Prey comic will find Black Canary and Huntress on a new mission against a foe known as Las Esposas de la Muerte, all while Harley Quinn resurfaces in Gotham and exits the Suicide Squad.
The new Birds of Prey series debuts in comic stores and online retailers on October 30, 2019, just months ahead of the film of the same name featuring Harley Quinn, Back Canary, and Huntress.
Full details on the Birds of Prey plot are currently unknown, though the film is said to center on Huntress, Black Canary, and Harley Quinn joining forces to protect Cassandra Cain when she comes into the possession of a diamond belonging to a criminal kingpin known as Black Mask.
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan, McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ali Wong, Robert Catrini, and Michael Masini have also been cast in undisclosed roles.
Birds of Prey will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
