Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson is staying quiet about her Batgirl script.
Batgirl was once on the fast track to being developed until Warner Bros. decided to go a different way with the female version of the Caped Crusader. WB hires Christina Hodson to develop the script for Batgirl after great reactions to her Birds of Prey script. Hodson has given a few updates on the movie since she was announced to write and now she’s staying pretty tight lipped. When asked by ComicBookMovie, if the Batgirl role was tailored for Bumblebee actress Hailee Steinfeld, Hodson had this to say:
Again, above my paygrade. *laughs* Not something I can speak to. But, yeah, I’m loving writing it, I can say that, it’s a total joy to work on. I love the character. And everyday I’m finding new things to love and get excited about.
Originally Avengers director and Justice League co-director, Joss Whedon was set to write and direct the Batgirl film but eventually left the project. His official reason for leaving was that he simply did not have a story to tell. Hodson eventually took over the project and, from the look of things, it is moving on quite nicely.
What do you all make of Hodson’s comments? Are you eager to see a Batgirl film hit theaters soon? Would you prefer seeing Batman get his first solo film before this happens? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Full details on the Birds of Prey plot are currently unknown, though the film will center on Huntress, Black Canary, and Harley Quinn joining forces to protect Cassandra Cain when she comes into the possession of a diamond belonging to a criminal kingpin known as Black Mask.
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan, McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ali Wong, Robert Catrini, and Michael Masini have also been cast in undisclosed roles.
