Is Hawkman coming to the DC Universe? Aldis Hodge speaks on his potential return as the character after Black Adam.
While Black Adam was far from a perfect movie, almost every fan agrees that the Justice Society of America was a stand-out part, with Aldis Hodge’s performance as Hawkman being one of the best depictions of the character in live-action. His character served as the heart of the team, setting the character up for a bright future before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reboot of the DC Universe.
Given a few actors, even those from Black Adam like Viola Davis, will be returning for the new DC Universe, fans are wondering if Aldis Hodge would be interested in coming back to the world of spandex and capes. When asked if he’d be open to returning as Hawkman, Hodge told fans to ask James Gunn, as he’s always ready to finish the story they started.
“I can’t really speak to that. [Chuckles]” Hodge told ScreenRant in a recent interview. “You’re gonna have to talk to James about it. But yeah, I don’t know really what’s in store for Hawkman. I will say that I would like to finish out the plans that we had for Hawkman, and sort of revisit them, because there’s such a body of depth when it comes to his whole storyline, and all that kind of stuff.”
“So, if that’s something they’re interested in, my door’s always open for that. But, I know they want to build out a very different world. I can’t speak to whether I’m going to be part of that world, as that’s above my paygrade, but if they want to pick up the phone, I’m always here.”
Given James Gunn has already cast Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, many fans believe that she and Hawkman have a bright future in the new DC Universe. This means it would be a gamble to have Aldis Hodge return to his Black Adam role, potentially confusing casual fans who may not understand the reboot. Though even if Hodge doesn’t return as Hawkman himself, here’s to hoping Gunn gives him a call for a new role!
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
