Rumor: DC Comics Planning To Introduce A Black Batman

A new rumor claims that DC Comics plans on introducing a Black Batman sometime next year.

According to Bleeding Cool, the new Batman will not be a Black version of Bruce Wayne, but rather an entirely new person donning the Cape and Cowl as the protector of Gotham City. Bleeding Cool is told that while no specific identity has been revealed yet, this new version would not be Duke Thomas – a character that was previously teased to take on the mantle of Robin followed by Batman.

Although Bruce Wayne is the primary Batman ever since the character was introduced in Detective Comics in 1939, characters such as Nightwing have taken on the mantle in different stories. In terms of big screen examples, The Dark Knight Rises ends with the implication that Robin John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) would become the new Caped Crusader after he enters the Batcave.

This would not be the first time a beloved comic book character would be altered to reflect the diversity of the world. Characters in the Marvel Comics universe such as Miles Morales’ Spider-Man and a female Thor have gained prominence in their respective stories. If this rumor is to be believed, it will be fascinating to see how DC Comics plans to introduce a Black Batman to the world.

Are you excited about the possibility of DC Comics introducing a Black Batman? Will it be someone entirely new or will it be a character we have already been introduced to? Meanwhile, the Dark Knight will return to the big screen in 2021 with Matt Reeves new film.

Plot details for The Batman are being kept under wraps. Previous rumors once pointed to an earlier version of the script featuring Ben Affleck bookending the movie as his current Batman while it introduced a younger version of the iconic character, played by Robert Pattinson. But with Ben Affleck retired from the role, Robert Pattinson has officially replaced the Batman v Superman and Justice League star as Batman.

The Batman arrives in theaters on June 25, 2021.
