Black Mask Takes Center Stage In Awesome ‘Birds of Prey’ Fan Art

Birds of Prey Ewan McGregor Black Mask DC Comics Batman

Black Mask comes to life in this impressive fan art for the upcoming Birds of Prey movie.

Since 1989, there have been 10 films featuring Batman to hit the big screen. With each one announced comes a flurry of fan-casting. The Caped Crusader has an eclectic Rogue’s Gallery to choose from but the character’s big screen endeavors seem to include the same characters over and over again. Bane, Catwoman, Two-Face, and especially the Joker have battled Batman on the big screen multiple times over the years. Finally, a fan-favorite Batman villain is headed to the big screen, but it won’t be in a Batman movie.

Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask, will be featured in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie as the villain. Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor is set to play the role of the Italian gangster, who has much of his face covered due to his iconic mask. It will certainly be a different role for McGregor, given that it’s a villain role, specifically an Italian gangster, and presumably will be mainly a voice performance if the film follows closely to the comics. Of course, many aspects could be changed in this specific incarnation of the character. Black Mask has yet to be featured in a live-action film but the character has made iconic appearances in the video games Batman: Arkham City, as well as its prequel Arkham Origins, and was prominently featured in the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood in 2010

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Black Mask and the Birds of Prey movie as soon as more information becomes available. Are you excited for McGregor to play the iconic villain? Directed by Cathy Yan with a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. Production on the project is expected to begin this January.

DC’s Birds of Prey film will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
