Black Panther cinematographer Rachel Morrison has revealed that she may not be able to return for the upcoming Marvel sequel.

Black Panther was one of 2018’s biggest hits, grossing over $1.3B worldwide , earned a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and becoming the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture. While Black Panther’s dusting in Avengers: Infinity War may have caused some to question whether or not a sequel would happen, his return in Avengers: Endgame insured that the film would not be the last time we see an adventure take place in Wakanda. Unfortunately, this adventure may have to go on without the first film’s cinematographer.

Rachel Morrison was in the middle of making her feature-length directorial debut with Flint Strong when the coronavirus sadly caused the entirety of Hollywood to effectively shut down. While speaking to The Playlist, Morrison revealed that the plan was to wrap up the film before heading on to work on Black Panther 2 but the film’s production dates may make this impossible:

“I was supposed to deliver my movie and then a few months later hop on to ‘Black Panther 2.’ Now, there might be some issue of those overlapping. Ryan and I talk regularly. He called me up cause he had a dream a few ago that he was three weeks into production and this male DP comes out holding a camera and he’s like, ‘That’s not my DP. Where the f*** is Rachel?’

If we had gone back in September (on Flint Strong), I think we could make it, but now it’s a bit of a moment of truth for everyone to realize if my movie is definitely going back in January that I probably won’t be able to do ‘Panther,’ which is devastating to me. If we can’t go back in January and we get pushed into fall of next year, maybe I can do ‘Panther.’”

What do you all make of Morrison’s words? Are you sad to hear that she may not be available for Black Panther 2? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
