Despite plans for various upcoming DC movies being shelved, Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is apparently still on course for its August 2023 release at Warner Bros. Discovery.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s radical new approach to DC properties became evident when it was announced last week that Leslie Grace’s Batgirl had been canceled, despite nearly being ready for release. The future of several other DC projects has now been thrown into question.
The upcoming Blue Beetle will be the first DC film based on a Latino superhero and will be the character’s first live-action film appearance.
Xolo Maridueña’s ‘Blue Beetle’ Arrives Next Year
With Blue Beetle set to explore a new DC property that is relatively unconnected to previous movies, unlike Batgirl, which was set to feature the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman, Warner Bros. Discovery executives may have felt it would be easier to tie this film into their new DC slate.
According to a report from THR, DC insiders are saying the film is still on track for its 2023 release date, avoiding the cull now faced by many other DC projects. Blue Beetle joins Season 2 of James Gunn’s Peacemaker in surviving the wave of cancellations, with Gunn’s other DC projects also understood to still be going ahead.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has also recently revealed that Black Adam, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash are all still expected to release. This news came as something of a shock, given recent controversies and a felony charge brought against The Flash star Ezra Miller.
Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is the next DC film set to hit theaters. Here is the synopsis:
Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a script written by Adam Sztykiel and Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani, the DC film stars Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan.
Black Adam opens in theaters on October 21, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the DC Universe at Warner Bros. Discovery, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
