Blue Beetle is set to debut later this month as the first film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. According to the film’s star Xolo Maridueña, he’s already spoken to Gunn about his return.
Xolo Maridueña is set to make history when Blue Beetle premieres August 18, with passionate fans forming the #BlueBeetleBattalion to promote the film. While the movie is projected to underperform in its opening weekend, it seems as though DC Studios already has plans for Jaimes Reyes to return, with Maridueña confirming he’s spoken to James Gunn and Peter Safran about his DC Universe future:
“I have had the pleasure of getting to speak to Mr. James Gunn and the whole DC fam,” Maridueña told Fandango. “At the end of the day, we have to cross this first hill and introduce Jamie to the world but it’s up to the audience to watch the movie…If it does well we get to open more doors for more Blue Beetles.”
Blue Beetle fans have already been salivating to see Ted Kord alongside Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes in the new DC Universe. While the film may underperform, it’s possible James Gunn and Peter Safran plan for Jaime to crossover into other DC Studios projects rather than focus on his own. Though only time will tell what fate holds for the Blue Beelte Battalion.
Who is DC’s Blue Beetle?
Blue Beetle is one of DC’s lesser-known heroes, but he has a dedicated fanbase nonetheless. Created in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski, Blue Beetle has gone through several iterations over the years. The Jaime Reyes version of the character was introduced during the events of 2006’s Infinite Crisis and quickly became a fan-favorite.
In the pages of DC Comics, Jaime Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, Texas. Jaime discovers a scarab beetle-shaped device that bonds with his body, giving him access to an advanced suit of armor and various powers. He becomes the latest in a long line of Blue Beetles and must learn to balance his newfound abilities with his everyday life.
Angel Manuel Soto is directing Blue Beetle from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The full cast of the movie also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and Harvey Guillén.
Blue Beetle is currently scheduled to hit theaters on August 18, 2023. Stay tuned for the latest news surrounding the film.
