Is Chris Evans making his return as Captain America? Anthony Mackie reveals what he knows about the actor’s potential role in Avengers: Doomsday.
It was recently confirmed that Anthony Mackie would be taking on the leading role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. However, given the project is already set to feature the return of Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, fans have been speculating if other former Avengers could also make their return. Namely, if Chris Evans could make his way back to the silver screen to appear as Captain America one final time.
One would think that the two Captain America actors would be rather close when it comes to talking about their appearances in the MCU. Yet when asked if he had any news about Chris Evans’ potential return in Avengers: Doomsday, Mackie admitted that he has no clue if it’s true or not. However, he did talk to Evans recently, and it seemed that his reprisal of the role wasn’t on the table for the highly-anticipated project.
“I didn’t know!” Mackie told Esquire when asked about reports that Evans was set to return in Avengers: Doomsday. “I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.’ I learned that right there. My manager showed me. He’s like, ‘Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.’ That’s all I know. I haven’t seen a script.”
Chris Evans Breaks Silence About Avengers: Doomsday Rumor
Chris Evans himself had a similar story to Anthony Mackie when asked about making his return as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. When speaking to Esquire for Mackie’s profile, Evans confirmed that he was, in fact, retired from the MCU. This comes along with a comment that people have been asking the actor about a potential return since Avengers: Endgame, despite recently making a cameo appearance as the Human Torch in Deadpool And Wolverine.
“That’s not true, though,” Evans remarked about his return to the MCU “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since ‘Endgame.’ I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!”
Of course, if there’s one thing MCU actors are known for more than spandex, it’s lying through their teeth about when they’ll return to the universe. Given how big Avengers: Doomsday and its follow-up Secret Wars are set to be, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans unite in at least one of the projects. Although, given Robert Downey Jr. is playing a villain, Evans may not end up back in the role of Captain America.
