Were critics too harsh?

Was Captain America: Brave New World really that bad? One of the films co-writers speaks on the mixed reception the film received from critics online.

Regardless of how one feels about the spiritual world, most fans can agree that Captain America: Brave New World was one of the most cursed productions the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever been a part of. The project was embroiled in controversy the moment it was announced due to its original title, and the struggles simply never let up. From reshoots to poorly timed trailers, it seemed as though absolutely nothing could go right for the film.

This led to Captain America: Brave New World getting a rather chilly reception by fans and critics alike. While the film made a pretty penny at the box office, it has become the third-worst reviewed project in the entire MCU. Rob Edwards, who served as one of the film’s co-writers, recently spoke about this backlash in an interview with The Direct, stating that he thinks the online critics got the film wrong during their reviews.

“I kinda did, kinda didn’t. I think similar things have happened… with a lot of different projects. It was weird to me, because some of my friends who are critics, I said, ‘I think you guys missed it. I think you guys got it wrong.'”

Is Captain America: Brave New World A Flop?

Despite critics raking the film over the coals, Captain America: Brave New World appears to have some pretty decent legs with audiences, earning $2.8 million domestically in its 7th weekend in theaters. Continuing on, Rob Edwards explained that having audiences love the film while critics struggle with it is better than having the audience turn its back entirely on the project.

“When the audience’s marks came in, everybody I saw said like, ‘Not only did I love it, but I brought my family to the next week. I’ve seen it more than once. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable film, and I don’t know what everybody’s talking about.’ I mean, that’s really what you want as opposed to the other thing.”

Of course, the MCU is a massive machine. There’s no telling how or if the series gets another installment following Captain America: Brave New World. At the very least, the project seems on track to not be an absolute flop, though it certainly wasn’t the smash success that many fans were hoping for.
