Which suit was better?

Was the perfect Spider-Man suit scrapped all the way back in Captain America: Civil War? The latest set photo from the film gives fans a fresh look at Tom Holland’s unused look.

There’s been a lot of talk about the “Marvel Method” recently in the wake of the revelation that Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t have a finished script. It’s a practice many fans blame on Disney’s “quality over quantity” approach in the post-Endgame era. The truth is, Marvel has been shooting without a script for over a decade, with perhaps the biggest example of this being Spider-Man‘s role in Captain America: Civil War.

At the time of development, Marvel didn’t even know if they would have the rights to use Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War due to their ongoing rights disputes with Sony Pictures. This is why the infamous concept art with Sharon Carter on Team Cap exists, as the character was originally going to take up the real estate used by the webhead in the final cut. Even when they had the rights to Spider-Man, Marvel decided which team Tom Holland would be on through chemistry tests with both Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.!

Tom Holland’s Scrapped Spider-Man Suit

Suffice to say, by the time Tom Holland had been dragged onto set, Marvel hadn’t exactly made up their mind about how they wanted the character to look. Fans have gotten a fresh look at the studio’s original vision for his suit in Captain America: Civil War, one which leans much more heavily into a Sam Raimi inspired aesthetic. It’s far from new information, but this set photo is the clearest look fans have gotten at the scrapped costume in a long time.

With Marvel about to enter a new era of Spider-Man films, it doesn’t seem likely this scrapped aesthetic from Captain America: Civil War will return anytime soon. This is likely for the best, as the suit seen in this set photo certainly evokes Tobey Maguire’s take on the character. And if there’s anything fans want from Tom Holland’s version of New York’s finest menace, it’s for him to finally stand on his own two feet.
