Tim Blake Nelson’s MCU supervillain the Leader, last seen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, is returning in Captain America: New World Order and director Julius Onah has teased his role in the film.
New World Order will be the first Captain America film to feature Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the titular hero, taking up the mantle from Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. It will mark the first time Tim Blake Nelson has played the Leader in his fully realized villainous form, 16 years after his first MCU appearance.
Julius Onah recently discussed the Leader’s role as an ingenious criminal mastermind who will keep audiences – and Captain America – guessing.
The Leader Takes The Lead
Speaking about the Leader’s role in Captain America: New World Order to Screen Rant, director Julius Onah confirmed Tim Blake Nelson’s villain will be several steps ahead of Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson throughout the film.
The Incredible Hulk introduced Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns, the alter ego of the Leader, who starts to gain his superpowers towards the end of the film. In the comics, the Leader has enhanced intelligence and psychic abilities.
Discussing the Leader’s role in New World Order, Onah said:
“We are all paranoid, and hopefully we’re all thrilled as well. This is a movie, like the previous Captain American movies, that [leans] into the tradition of this genre. And what’s so great in this film is Sam Wilson has an incredible adversary in The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson, this brilliant mastermind who’s always 1-2-3-4 steps ahead.
“I think audiences, as they watch the film, will never be able to see what’s coming right around the corner.”
As the Leader has typically been an enemy of the Hulk, some fans are wondering whether the jolly jade giant might also appear in New World Order. Already confirmed to be joining Sam Wilson in his fight against the Leader are Carl Lumbly’s Isaiah Bradley, Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres, and Shira Haas as the Israeli superhero Sabra.
Anthony Mackie last appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Here is the synopsis:
Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”
Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, the series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent. Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills, and Carl Lumbly also appear.
