‘Captain Marvel’: Brie Larson Talks Playing A Flawed Hero

Captain Marvel Brie Larson MCUSuperheroes whether they be from Marvel, DC or other comic brands all exhibit some otherworldly features that most humans wish to have. But despite their larger-than-life abilities, some of the best heroes are the ones that are still human at the end of the day. Because of the flawed nature of heroes, it helps readers and audiences relate to them more. With that in mind, Academy Award-winner Brie Larson hopes to channel that with her role as Captain Marvel.

In an on set interview with io9 for the highly-anticipated MCU film, Larson discussed the nature of flawed heroes and how the imperfections of Carol Danvers helped her gain a broader insight into bringing the character to life onscreen:

“All of my heroes were just unapologetically themselves. They were flawed at times, and that’s okay. So for me, it’s part of who Carol is too. She’s flawed. She’s not perfect. So in order for me to feel comfortable stepping into this position, I have to accept my humanness and remind everybody that I’m a human, and I’m an artist. And I just wanna make art, and that’s really it.”

The idea of the imperfect, flawed hero is the bread and butter of what makes Marvel Comics so popular to the masses. It’ll be exciting to see how Brie Larson adds this interesting layer to Carol Danvers when Captain Marvel hits theaters this spring.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Based on the Marvel comic character first appearing in 1968, the story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.  Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain Marvel will be released in theaters on March 8, 2019.
