Marvel might be pulling a major twist with Jude Law’s character in next year’s Captain Marvel.
There has been a lot of back and forth regarding the true identity of Jude Law’s role in Captain Marvel. Many fans have assumed from the story and trailer that he’s playing Mar-Vell, he was even briefly labeled as such on a Disney website, but a toy from the film also listed him as a character named Yon-Rogg.
Fans who are familiar with Yon-Rogg know that he has a history with quite a few characters who will be appearing in the film. Jude Law’s character is being touted as a Starforce Commander in promo material and interestingly enough, Yon-Rogg is also a commander for the Kree military force. The Marvel foe is also known for his hatred towards Mar-Vell, who he left for dead on Earth at one point so he could pursue his beloved Una. This is where another character from the film comes in. It’s already been revealed that Lee Pace will be reprising his Guardians of the Galaxy role Ronan the Accuser and he too has a history with Yon-Rogg.
In the comics, Yon-Rogg was very persistent about putting Mar-Vell on trial before Ronan the Accuser. Ronan only appeared for a brief moment in the Captain Marvel trailer, so there’s no way of saying how he’ll work into the story quite yet, but this plot thread seems like a fitting way to place the character in the film, hopefully for future use. Over time, Ronan and Yon-Rogg eventually worked together to try and kill Mar-Vell.
Yon-Rogg also plays a very important part in Carol Danvers becoming Ms. Marvel. Ronan and Yon-Rogg’s pursuit of Mar-Vell eventually leads to the capture of Carol Danvers, who during her rescue was transformed into Ms. Marvel. So, why does there seem to be a back and forth on Jude Law’s role via toy boxes and Disney sites? It could be that Marvel Studios is specifically trying to recapture what they did with The Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Ben Kingsley was advertised in the trailers as being the main foe, the iconic villain The Mandarin, but near the film’s third act it is revealed that Kingsley’s character is just an English actor hired by the real villain Aldrich Killian, played by Guy Pierce.
It’s possible that Jude Law is either playing both Yon-Rogg and Mar-Vell, or Mar-Vell is actually Yon-Rogg in disguise and the classic events from the comics between the two have already occurred, with Yon-Rogg being the victor. This could be the reason that fans have only been shown intergalactic action in the Captain Marvel trailers in very quick, out of context spurts. The footage shown in the trailers with the most context seems to be the Earth-centric footage. It’s possible that even Carol’s initial crash on Earth is not only caused by the Skrulls, but Skrulls working with Yon-Rogg.
Disney and Marvel seem to be playing it very close to the chest when it comes to the story of Captain Marvel. This means that fans, much like Iron Man 3, won’t learn about the film’s true story until it unfolds onscreen.
