Captain Marvel has officially soared past Wonder Woman at the worldwide box office.
The news comes to us courtesy of Deadline. The outlet is reporting that, as of the Friday update, Marvel Studios 21st film in Captain Marvel has officially overtaken Warner Bros. and DC’s Wonder Woman at the worldwide box office.
As of writing this article, Captain Marvel is the 73rd highest-grossing film of all time with over $825.1 million taken in at the global box office. According to Deadline, the Brie Larson film has also flown past Spider-Man to land the 16th best slot for a superhero film. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman sits just one slot lower at number 72 with a worldwide haul exceeding $821.8 million.
Wonder Woman, however, is still sitting pretty when it comes to domestic grosses. DC’s first female-fronted superhero flick currently fills the 25th highest-grossing film on the domestic charts. Looking back at Marvel Studios, Captain Marvel is 92nd and counting.
Keep in mind that Captain Marvel is still only in its third frame of release and the next superhero film, Warner Bros. and DC’s Shazam, is still a couple of weeks away. That leaves plenty of room for Marvel to continue to scoop up the green.
Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.
Captain Marvel is now playing in theaters!
