An unsettling scene involving Chace Crawford’s the Deep eating a live octopus in Amazon’s The Boys has, surprisingly, been commended by PETA.
The Boys has returned to Amazon Prime Video for its third season and the superhero series has quickly proven itself to be just as depraved as ever. One moment in Episode 3 of the new season sees Chace Crawford’s the Deep being forced into eating a writhing live octopus by Homelander in order to earn his place back amongst the ranks of superhero team the Seven.
The moment was brought to life with a CGI octopus, earning PETA’s approval for the production’s cruelty-free approach, as well as the sympathetic light in which Timothy is portrayed in his grisly final moments.
“Tech, Not Terror”
The Deep is The Boys‘ analogue for DC’s Aquaman, though his connection to fish and other aquatic life runs a little deeper than his DC counterpart’s. The Deep is shown forming close friendships – and even a sexual attraction – to his fishy friends. This makes it all the more disturbing when Homelander presents him with Timothy, an octopus the Deep knows, on a platter and orders him to eat the animal as it begs for its life.
Responding to the disturbing sequence, PETA chose to honor Chace Crawford, The Boys creator Eric Kripke and the visual effects team on The Boys with a “Tech, Not Terror” award for their use of a computer-generated octopus in the scene, which they called “thought-provoking.”
PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said “The Boys‘ real heroes are working behind the scenes, creating a realistic CGI octopus so that animals can live in peace. PETA is celebrating this series for helping viewers see every octopus as an individual like Timothy, not as an entrée or as entertainment.”
The Boys stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, and Jensen Ackles.
