Is Gambit about to get even stranger? Channing Tatum reveals more details about his return to the infamous role in Avengers: Doomsday.

While there were a lot of interesting names seen on the backs of the Avengers: Doomsday chairs, perhaps none caused excitement and exhaustion in equal measure than Channing Tatum. The actor had recently made his debut as Gambit after over a decade of trying to get a film starring the character made, quickly becoming a fan-favorite due to his over-the-top accent. The second Deadpool and Wolverine ended, people were already begging for his return.

However, it is that very accent that made him so popular with fans which has others worried about his return. Given how rocky of a foundation Avengers: Doomsday has, there’s a fear that a fast talking Cajun may tip the scales in favor of the goofy. However, it seems that Channing Tatum is aware of this, and he’s been adjusting the accent during production in turn.

“The accent’s a tough one,” Tatum remarks to Entertainment Weekly. “It’s hard to explain that to someone that isn’t from the South, isn’t from Louisiana. My dad’s from New Orleans. I’ve been around.”

“That accent has a big spectrum. You cannot understand ’em at all, and you can understand ’em at times. So you have to really play with it…[I] had to really show them that you can still play comedy, you can still play drama.”

Channing Tatum’s Avengers: Doomsday Experience

Things haven’t exactly been going well with Channing Tatum during the filming of Avengers: Doomsday, with an injury on set hampering his ability to play Gambit in some key action scenes. However, it seems as though Tatum is still taking his return in stride, and celebrating even the minor victories as the Russos continue to film his scenes.

“There’s a lot of exposition that has to happen in those movies, and you can even do that. So it’s been a strange but really gratifying thing. When you’re trying to shove a square peg for so long and then finally it just goes [through], then you’re like, ‘Yes! Alright! Cool. We’re off and running now.’ So it’s fun.”

It’ll be interesting to hear what type of accent Channing Tatum goes for with Gambit when Avengers: Doomsday finally his theaters. There’s a fine, fine line he’ll need to walk in order for his return not to disappoint at least some members of the audience. Though, for everyone’s sake, hopefully he’s able to walk that walk!
