Was Daredevil in character?

Was Daredevil appearing in She-Hulk the right call? Charlie Cox reflects on his controversial cameo as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in Los Angeles.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has gone down as one of the most infamous shows in Marvel history. Quality aside, the show took a lot of bold swings that resonated with some fans and alienated others. While many may points to Megan Thee Stallion’s cameo in the project or the serialized nature of a court room drama, one of the biggest dividing points for fans was Charlie Cox’s appearance as Matt Murdock himself, aka Daredevil.

Daredevil was famous for being the “edgy” Marvel show. While the rest of the MCU was making action comedies with snarky comebacks, Charlie Cox brought a truly grounded and traumatic lens to the superhero universe. Which is why it was so glaring when, in his first major appearance since coming back to the role, the character’s cameo in She-Hulk focused much more on comedy and romance than any episode before it.

Charlie Cox Breaks Silence On She-Hulk Cameo

With Charlie Cox busy chugging along on production of Daredevil: Born Again, the actor hasn’t had much time to reflect on his She-Hulk cameo. However, during the promotion of the current revival, he did stop to comment on people’s reactions to his role. Cox admitted that, while the appearance certainly wasn’t for everyone, he did think it made sense for the character.

“It’s funny how many opinions I’ve heard about this little moment in She-Hulk,” Cox remarked in a chat with IGN. “There’s the Walk of Shame, which was a last-minute idea where they set up a big green screen and just had me walk across it carrying my shoes. And a lot of people don’t like it, and a lot of people love it.”

“If you take the Matt Murdock from our show and you put him in She-Hulk as-is, he’s probably overly serious and becomes the butt of all jokes. So he’s got to adapt to the tone. And there’s precedent within the comics. There are many runs of the comics where there’s a lot of levity, there’s a lot of tongue-in-cheek, a lot of fun. It’s an opportunity. It’s a whole different [kind of] fun with that. And maybe at some point we’ll get to see the favor returned.”

As Charlie Cox said, She-Hulk and the way it portrayed Daredevil wasn’t for everyone. However, it’s clear that a decent chunk of the fanbase is on board with giving Matt Murdock some much needed levity in between his brooding sessions. While it currently doesn’t seem likely She-Hulk will be getting a season 2, it’s very possible that the Mean Green Law Machine makes her way down to Hell’s Kitchen for a cameo in Daredevil: Born Again season 2.
