Eternals director Chloe Zhao has revealed if any of the characters in her film were snapped by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

When the first trailer for Eternals was released, there was one big question on everyone’s mind: where were these guys when Thanos was enacting his plan for galactic genocide? The film itself did answer this to some extent, revealing that these very kinds of questions are what broke the team apart. Another question that pops up, however, is whether or not any of them were snapped out of existence by Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity War?

In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos basically won. Despite last-minute acts of heroism from Scarlett Witch and Thor, Thanos succeeded in his goal of wiping out half of all life in the universe. This also included any major Marvel Cinematic Universe characters like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and The Guardians of the Galaxy. But did any of this affect the Eternals?

While speaking to Cinemablend, Eternals director Chloe Zhao addressed this very question. While she didn’t go into specifics, she revealed that, if you thought about what the Celestials tell the titular characters, they cannot technically have been part of Thanos’ snap:

Well, I can’t say this out loud, but if you think about… if you think about what the Celestials told them. If you think about what the Celestials told them about themselves, technically they can’t get blipped.

Here is the synopsis for Marvel Studios’ Eternals:

“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”

Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

Eternals is now in theaters. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
