Chris Evans has been teasing his departure from his role as Captain America for some time now and we finally have a definitive answer on how/if Steve Rogers’ story ends at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame.
SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME BELOW!!!
Chris Evans’s portrayal of Captain America has gone through a lot since his first appearance but each installment of his story is heartbreaking to some degree or another. Since his first appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers has only gone 2 out of the 7 films he’s been in without losing something dear to him.
Captain America’s story has always been about sacrifice for the greater good. Whether that was his own life in Captain America: The First Avenger, or his relationship with Iron Man and the Governments of the world in Captain America: Civil War, he’s sacrificed a lot. On top of what he sacrificed, he had even more taken from him. His best friend, Bucky Barnes, his trust in the Government he once stood for and even the love of his life, Peggy Carter.
Chris Evan’s Captain America has been through the wringer, and a lot of people theorized that he would be the one to lay down his life in the final battle to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. A lot of people were proven wrong when it ended being Tony Stark as Iron Man who laid down his life to defeat Thanos and his army. Instead of sacrificing himself, Captain America got the happy ending he truly deserved.
At the conclusion of the film, Chris Evan’s Captain America is tasked with returning the Infinity Stones to the points in time where they were taken from to avoid causing any time paradoxes or any other anomalies. He journey is supposed to take only about five seconds in our time, but after his return window passes and he doesn’t return Falcon, Winter Soldier and Hulk begin to panic. That is until Winter Soldier notices a man sitting on a bench not far from where they’re standing.
Falcon and Winter Soldier walk towards the benched Falcon approaches the old man. The man is none other than an old Steve Rogers. He tells Falcon that after he completed his mission, he decided to give the happy ending that Tony Stark suggested a try. Being as he is obviously too old to return as Captain America, he hands his shield to Falcon. Cap asks how it feels, Falcon says “Like it belongs to someone else.” Captain America smiles and says, “Well, it doesn’t.” Cap shakes Falcon’s hand, and Falcon sees a wedding ring on his finger.
It turns out that Chris Evans’ Captain America went back to the time after he went down in the ice and reunited with his best girl, Peggy Carter. He got to save the world and live his happily ever after with the love of his life. The film closes out with Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers finally getting to have his dance with Peggy Carter in their house, ending Steve Rogers arc as Captain America.
