Chris Evans’ Lightyear is performing below expectations in its box office debut.

The new Toy Story spinoff film Lightyear was first announced back in December 2022 as the definitive origin story of the original Space Ranger Buzz that inspired the toy. This film features Chris Evans as the voice of the iconic character that was the basis of the action figure voiced by Tim Allen.

Given its roots with Toy Story, one of the most-beloved animated film series of all-time, Disney and Pixar clearly had high hopes for the box office potential of Lightyear. For one, it’s Pixar’s long-awaited return to the big screen after their last three films Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were relegated to Disney Plus as free exclusives rather than their initially-planned theatrical releases. Also, it stars Captain America himself, Chris Evans as the iconic Space Ranger.

However, it appears that the film is performing slightly under expectations at the box office. Lightyear was initially projected for a $70-85 million opening weekend, but is currently estimated to earn $52 million in its debut. Although this will be the biggest debut for an animated film amidst the pandemic, this is certainly below what Disney and Pixar had hoped, especially for a film tied to one of their most popular franchises.

Lightyear will likely be topped by Dinosaurs.

In its second weekend at the box office, Jurassic World Dominion will likely be on top again. The sequel is currently on track to gross $57.1 million. This won’t be the first time a Pixar film was bested by the dinosaur franchise at the box office. In 2015, the first Jurassic World was the apex predator of that summer, beating out Pixar’s acclaimed Inside Out, which won Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.

Here is the synopsis for Chris Evans’ Lightyear:

The definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, “Lightyear” follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.

Directed by Angus MacLane, the film features the voice talents of Chris Evans, Uzo Aduba, Peter Sohn, Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Efren Ramirez, and Keira Hairston.

Lightyear blasts off into theaters on June 17, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming Toy Story spinoff, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
