Is Chris Hemsworth’s time in the MCU drawing to a close? The actor clarifies his recently viral video thanking fans for his time as Thor Odinson!
There’s been a lot of speculation in recent years that Chris Hemsworth will be hanging up the hammer as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor is one of the longest serving in the MCU. And following the flop of Thor: Love and Thunder, many assumed he only had one or two outings left in him as the character. This was only compounded when the actor revealed his desire to slow down on acting following a diagnosis of having a high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
This speculation was compounded when the star posted a video thanking fans for his journey in the MCU. Given this was released around the time of a number of Avengers: Doomsday announcements, many saw this as a way of Chris Hemsworth subtly announcing his intentions to step away from the role of Thor following the end of the Multiverse Saga.
Is Chris Hemsworth Retiring As Thor?
Though, much like most things on the internet, speculation doesn’t always match up with reality. Chris Hemsworth recently spoke on the viral “Thank You” video during a discussion with The Hollywood Reporter. The actor revealed that the video was “misconstrued” by fans, and that it was never meant to signal his intention to stop playing Thor. Rather, it was a video celebrating a new era of his character in the MCU following the confirmation he’ll return in Avengers: Doomsday.
“It was certainly not the intent. To be honest, my social media team assembled some footage and were like, ‘Oh, this could be cool. We’ll put some stuff up and thank the fans.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, cool. It’s been great.’ So we penned it together, and off I went to do something else.”
“But then I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, ‘Ugh, we’ve given the wrong impression here.’ (Laughs.) We didn’t do any [damage control]; there was no damage control necessary. But a lot was read into a little.”
“I was [already] off starting another chapter of this character, and this journey has been the biggest part of my career. So [the video] was a moment of gratitude, and it wasn’t anything else. But it definitely got misconstrued and perceived in a different way.”
Of course, it’s possible, if not likely, that Chris Hemsworth will play Thor for the final time in the MCU within the next five years. Be that in Avengers: Doomsday, Secret Wars, or one final solo movie. However, if that does come to pass, it does truly seem that this video has nothing to do with his decision. Rather, it was simply a nice walk down memory lane as a new saga reaches its Endgame.
