Is Chris Hemsworth hanging up the hammer? The actor teases that there’s some fun plans in store for Thor in Avengers: Doomsday – and potentially beyond.
By the time that Avengers: Doomsday releases, Chris Hemsworth will have been playing Thor for 15 years. It certainly goes down as one of the longest lasting roles in cinematic history, largely only rivaled by his fellow comic book contemporaries. However, with many of the MCU’s original guard on their way out, many suspect that the project may be a final ride for the God of Thunder.
And it certainly seems as though Thor will play a major role in Avengers: Doomsday. Chris Hemsworth lauded the production quite a bit last year, and that mentality seems to be continuing through into 2026. Speaking on the SmartLess podcast, the actor teases that he got to explore an angle he never has before with Thor.
“It’s been so much fun. And what I’ve really enjoyed [about] it, unlike a lot of what the other characters that the [actors] were given, they have had to be pretty consistent. Whereas working with Taika Waititi on his films versus Kenneth Branagh with those films and then with the Russos, all of them had quite a different sort of tonal opinion.”
“But they also let me try different things. It’s the same with my tattoos, I’d be getting really bored [with] the same thing and having a real need to kind of throw [the performance] in different directions.”
Chris Hemsworth’s Future As Thor
However, perhaps the most shocking thing to come out of the interview was that it seems Chris Hemsworth may still have quite a bit of runway to go as Thor. When asked about what the future holds for the God of Thunder, the actor teased that he may pick up the hammer “a couple more times,” teasing that he may just end up surviving Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
“I was talking to Kevin Feige about it, and he said it’s cool because the audience now expects dramatic turns with the character. And whatever we do next—we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be [different].”
This news certainly comes as a shock to those that have been keeping up with Chris Hemsworth, who said back in 2022 that he wanted to focus on his family after finding out he had a higher than average chance of developing Alzheimer’s. If this quote is taken at face value, it could be that Avengers: Doomsday is only the start of a new era for Thor.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in December 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
