A new image has been released from Thor: Love and Thunder, showing Chris Hemsworth’s thunder god in a fiery scene with his trusty Stormbreaker at his side.
Thor: Love and Thunder will see Chris Hemsworth return as Marvel’s God of Thunder as he reunites with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, the new owner of his former hammer, who has been transformed into another embodiment of the Asgardian hero. The film’s trailer sees Thor claiming his “superheroing days are over,” but with the arrival of Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher looming on the horizon, it seems unlikely Thor’s retirement will last long.
A new image from Thor: Love and Thunder offers a clearer look at a scene shown in the trailer’s closing moments, in which Chris Hemsworth’s Thor comes face-to-face with Natalie Portman’s version of the character. It sees the Asgardian god in what appears to be a suburban environment, which is in flames around him. He has his trusty new axe, Stormbreaker, ready at his side and is wearing a new black costume with a fur-topped cape. Check out the new image, revealed by Entertainment Weekly, via the tweet below:
Judging by the architecture seen in the image and earlier shots in the trailer, those burning buildings look like they could be in New Asgard, the Earth-based Asgardian settlement that was founded following the destruction of the original Asgard. If that is the case, Thor’s people may have come under attack in his absence. This threat could be what led to Jane Foster taking up his old hammer and being granted the power of Thor.
Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.
