Chris Pine and the rest of the cast from the Kelvin Universe are in talks to return for the new Star Trek film.

While Star Trek on the small screen has been going strong with its various shows, the films haven’t had the best time of late. The last live-action film, Star Trek: Beyond failed to impress at the box office and efforts to reduce the series’ budget, including salary cuts, caused actors like Chris Pine to pull out of negotiations. The planned fourth film was said to involve time travel and would have featured the return of Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk.

Since the plans for the fourth Star Trek film fell apart, numerous attempts have been made to start the franchise up again. The most notable of these attempts was Noah Hawley’s Star Trek film which Paramount shelved in mid-2020. Then late last year, Paramount revealed that a new film was in development. Now the studio has revealed that the Kevin cast is in talks to return to the franchise.

In the franchise, the Kelvin universe refers to the universe created in the 2009 reboot film. This timeline exists separate from the main Star Trek television series and films and remains somewhat controversial among fans. The cast of these films includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, and John Cho who are all now in talks to reprise their roles. Paramount made the announcement earlier today during the investor meeting presentation.

Original Kelvin Universe director J.J. Abrams is producing the upcoming Star Trek film. WandaVision director Matt Shakman has been brought on to helm the project. Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires are rewriting the film’s original script by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

Here is the synopsis for Star Trek: Beyond:

From Director Justin Lin and Producer J.J. Abrams comes one of the best-reviewed action movies of the year. Dispatched on a rescue mission to the farthest reaches of space, the USS Enterprise is ambushed by Krall, a ruthless enemy sworn against the Federation. Crash-landing on an uncharted hostile world, Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew are separated with no means of escape. Only Jaylah, a rebellious alien warrior, can help them reunite and find a way off the planet in a race against time to stop Krall’s deadly army from triggering all-out galactic war.

Directed by Justin Lin from a script written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, the JJ Abrams-produced film stars John Cho, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, and Idris Elba.

The new Star Trek film is currently set to debut on December 22nd, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
