With just days remaining until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hitting theaters, Chris Pratt has a lot of memories to look back on. When the actor was initially cast in the role of Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord, many fans were puzzled at the thought. Pratt’s most recognizable role to date was that of Andy Dwyer, the overweight and dim-witted character on NBC’s sitcom Parks and Recreation. Regardless of pre-conceived notions, the first film dropped in 2014, and that along with his turn in 2015’s Jurassic World turned Pratt into one of the biggest movie stars in the world.
In a lot of ways, James Gunn taking a chance on Chris Pratt to headline Marvel Studios’ then-unknown band of misfits was a big risk that definitely paid off. When Kevin Feige first announced the plans for Phase 2 following the record-breaking release of the first Avengers film in 2012, some were surprised that the new title announced wasn’t a standalone Hulk film or a more well-known character, but instead on an obscure title like Guardians of the Galaxy. The addition of such oddball characters that included the likes of Groot and Rocket Raccoon led many to predict the film to be Marvel’s first bomb.
During the official virtual press junket for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 held last week, Chris Pratt reflected on the last day of filming, in which he delivered a speech for the cast and crew looking back on the long and winding journey of bringing not just this film, but all three films to life for over a decade. “And for the most part, you know, the feelings that I was sort of writing down on the back of my mind about the experience were, they sound trite, but it was just gratitude and just being grateful. To James, I wanted to be the guy who reminded everyone how far we’d come. And all the things that we’d overcome. And so, I read, like, a few reviews from people who had said that the Guardians was going to be the first big flop.”
Chris Pratt also compared the final day of shoot to that of the end of summer camp or the last day of school. Feeling bittersweet, he expressed hope and confidence that he may see his co-stars and James Gunn sometime in the future, despite the story of this version of the titular team coming to an end with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 synopsis reads as follows: “Our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere, but it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life – a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
