‘Mission: Impossible:’ Christopher McQuarrie Discusses Green Lantern

Green Lantern Christopher McQuarrie Mission Impossible

The idea that Christopher McQuarrie could go from the Mission: Impossible series to helming a DC film isn’t lost on anybody, given that he worked with the Man of Steel himself on Fallout. Now does that mean that, should Warner Bros. bring McQuarrie into the fold for a DC-related project that he’d be immediately saddled with a Superman film. Well, no one can say for sure on that one. But there’s apparently another comic property that was once on his mind, and it involves the Guardians.

No, not of the Galaxy. That’s the other one. I’m talking about the Guardians of the Universe. The world of Green Lantern. There was a brief appearance of a Green Lantern during a flashback in Justice League, but while we’ve gotten many of the established members of the Justice League on film, one that we have yet to see is Green Lantern, whether that’s Hal Jordan, John Stewart, or, you know, Guy Gardner. And this property was once the topic of discussion for Christopher McQuarrie, according to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld.

Liefeld, who recently indicated that Christopher McQuarrie and Henry Cavill had discussed Superman during the filming of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, also tweeted out that McQuarrie had given some brief thoughts to the Green Lantern property. Per Liefeld’s tweet: ““I’m not a comic book fan. I’m a storytelling guy.” He has discussed Green Lantern…. has a version that isn’t comic book canon. Was asked to direct it – said he can’t, “There’s no script!” ?”

Here, have a look at Liefeld’s tweet about Christopher McQuarrie discussing Green Lantern below:

There were talks not too long about about a Green Lantern film set in the DC Extended Universe that was described as “Lethal Weapon in space,” but there hasn’t been a lot of talk concerning that project since then. At least, none that’s been made public. Plus, DC is currently working on the likes of AquamanShazam!Wonder Woman 1984, the Todd Phillips Joker film, and, more recently, Birds of Prey. Perhaps the studio isn’t wanting to just throw out too many projects without a firm commitment on said film, but what do you think?

Would you want to see Christopher McQuarrie tackle a Green Lantern film? And if so, what sort of story would you want to see him tell? Let us know in the comments below.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan, Angela Bassett, Henry Cavill, and Vanessa Kirby. The film is currently in theaters.
