The case of Superman in the DC Extended Universe seems to be that the Kryptonian is in a state of suspended animation. Okay, sure, you saw Henry Cavill come back and suit up in last year’s Justice League –– giving some critics and skeptics the Superman they had in mind, which seemed to be more akin to longing for the nostalgia of the Christopher Reeves films — but it’s also been five years since the release of Man of Steel and there’s yet to be a proper Superman follow-up to that film. And it’s not like no one has ideas or is interested, particularly if you listen to Henry Cavill talk about what he would want, or director Christopher McQuarrie, in fact, should he want to direct.
The pieces all seem to be there, but like Birds of Prey getting a release date only when things are ready to go, such might also be the case if and when Warner Bros. decides to move forward on the Man of Steel. But again, there’s a lot of thoughts and ideas brewing, which brings us to today’s “story” of sorts. As you know, Henry Cavill and Christopher McQuarrie joined forces in the recent Mission: Impossible – Fallout film that came out earlier this summer and is still in theaters now.
Given the positive reception to Henry Cavill’s performance coupled with Christopher McQuarrie’s direction, and stating recently that he’s just waiting for the call, it seems the final move to be made would be Warner Bros. giving such a project the green light. That’s not the case right now, but there do appear to be conversations or rumblings. This brings to the man behind the Merc with the Mouth, Rob Liefeld. Very early this morning, Liefeld tweeted that Christopher McQuarrie had an “awesome conversation about an awesome version of Superman” while with Henry Cavill as the two worked on the recent Mission: Impossible film.
And it’s left at that. That’s as much of a tease as the headline for this very story is since Liefeld doesn’t go into detail about exactly what McQuarrie and Cavill discussed. But, if indeed the case, it’s something. Here, have a look at Liefeld’s tweet discussing the matter:

Make of that what you will. Despite all of the hoopla from a week or so ago regarding who said what and what’s true or false regarding Henry Cavill’s future as Superman, the cape, as his agent said, still looks to be in his closet. And while Warner Bros. is indeed still moving forward with projects like the upcoming Aquaman film, Shazam!, Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey, and the Todd Phillips Joker film, time will tell when we see Cavill suit up as Superman, and if Christopher McQuarrie will be the one in the director’s chair.
What do you think? Would you like to see Christopher McQuarrie direct a Superman film, given his recent collaboration with Henry Cavill? Let us know in the comments below.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan, Angela Bassett, Henry Cavill, and Vanessa Kirby. The film is currently in theaters.
