Christopher Nolan recently broke down Tenet and how the upcoming film is made for theaters more so than his previous films.
Since the coronavirus hit the United States, many films pushed back their release dates by several months, if not by a full year. Several others looked for alternative means of distribution, included being released directly On-Demand or releases on other streaming services. One of the few films not to move its release date was Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Tenet.
Tenet, of course, was expected to be the first big summer blockbuster to be released. Many in the film industry had expected the coronavirus pandemic to have calmed down by the time the film came out. Christopher Nolan himself has been adamant about the film being released in theaters and has maintained that it is meant to be a theatrical experience. While speaking with Deadline, Christopher Nolan future reinforced this sentiment, saying Tenet was made for the theaters more so than any of his previous films:
“We’re in the final throes of it. I don’t want to say too much about it other than we’re extraordinarily excited about what we’ve been able to do with this material. I think of all the films that I’ve made, this is perhaps the one that is most designed for the audience experience, the big screen experience. This is a film whose image and sound really needs to be enjoyed in your theaters on the big screen and we’re very, very excited for you to see what it is we’ve done. We’ve made big films in the past, but this is a film whose global reach and level of action is beyond anything we’ve ever attempted before. I think we only would have been able to pull off this film with the level of experience we’ve had doing action films in the past.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Tenet:
“John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle “Tenet.” Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion.”
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, and Himesh Patel. Christopher Nolan also serves as a producer alongside his wife Emma Thomas, with Thomas Hayslip on board as an executive producer.
