IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond says Christopher Nolan is hoping theaters are open by July for Tenet amid the coronavirus outbreak.
One of the most anticipated movies of the year is Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. However, many studios have shifted their release date schedules due to the coronavirus, with some films getting pushed to 2021. Tenet is one film that is still sticking to its original release date for now, which is currently July.
There’s no telling when movie theaters across the country will open again, but the industry is certainly taking a huge hit due to state shutdowns. Christopher Nolan has also been vocal about the need to support movie theaters at this time. During IMAX’s quarterly earnings call on Friday, CEO Richard Gelfond said no one is pushing harder for the future of theaters than Nolan:
“I know Chris really would like to be come out with the film that for theaters, but that’s up to a lot of things including government regulations and the virus and all sorts of things. Certain filmmakers are very anxious to have their movies release. So I don’t know anyone in America who’s pushing harder than Chris Nolan to get the theaters open and to get his movie released in July when it’s scheduled for. So it’s really a balance. I’ve frankly never seen closer cooperation of the studios and the exhibitors than now. There’s just almost a daily dialogue going on for everybody’s trying to assess when are the likely opening dates and what is the optimal time. And I think people are really working together to make it happen.”
