AT&T CEO John Stankey assured analysts and fans that Christopher Nolan’s Tenet won’t debut on HBO Max before its theatrical release.
Following the recent news that Tenet is being indefinitely delayed amid the ongoing pandemic, John Stankey, the CEO of WarnerMedia’s parent company, recently confirmed that the film won’t arrive on HBO Max before its theatrical release. During a call with industry analysts, Stankey addressed the concerns about Tenet or Wonder Woman 1984 heading to HBO Max instead of getting a proper theatrical debut. He said he’d be very surprised to see that happen before making a point of confirming it definitely won’t happen with Tenet.
“Is it going to happen with a movie like Tenet or something like Wonder Woman? I’d be very surprised if that would be the case. In fact, I can assure you with Tenet, that’s not going to be the case.”
Stankey then later spoke to CNBC going into more detail about the reason behind the delay to Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. He explained that although some areas of the United States are safer than others, the film needs to release across the country instead of a staggered debut. He praised the film saying it’s an experience specifically design to be seen in a theater, rather than on a streaming service like HBO Max.
“It needs to release nationwide. So if you have a major metropolitan area — say, Los Angeles — that’s totally out of check and you have other parts of the country that are totally in control, it doesn’t necessarily give you an option to open it in half the country. It just doesn’t work very well that way. It’s a movie, an experience, that should be seen in theaters. It was engineered to be that way. As a result of that, it needs to show up that way. Certainly, Christopher would like it to be that way. That’s how he wants that piece of work that he’s done to be seen by moviegoers and that’s why it’s going to be something that shows up in a theater.”
