Colin Farrell Reveals New Details About The Penguin’s Role In ‘The Batman’ Sequel

The Penguin takes flight!

Colin Farrell The Penguin HBO Max Series The Batman

The Penguin is making a comeback! Colin Farrell finally speaks on the role he’ll play in the upcoming sequel to The Batman as scripts hit actors’ hands.

After some long, long years of waiting, it seems as though progress on The Batman‘s sequel is finally making headway. It wasn’t too long ago that Matt Reeves announced that the script for the project was officially finished. Now, with production set to start at the top of next year, it seems the team is now starting to prepare actors for the role they’ll play in the movie.

One of those actors is Colin Farrell, who played Oz Cobb in the original movie and its spin-off series The Penguin. Many assumed that, given the rather unnerving ending of the show, Gotham’s most feathery felon may have a large role to play in the highly-anticipated sequel. However, while he hasn’t read The Batman saga’s next script, Farrell doesn’t seem to expect a substantial role.

“I’ll be getting into the script, I think, this week, and I’ll be there for however long,” Farrell told The Wrap in a recent statement. “I don’t have many scenes, I don’t believe, but I’ll be there for whatever. Matt Reeves is so brilliant. I don’t know what the story is yet. I just know that obviously Matt has slaved for a few years now to really make something special.”

The Penguin’s Role In The Batman Sequel

Despite being one of the most recognizable faces (and noses) in the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery, the Penguin mostly tends to play second fiddle. This was true in The Batman as well. For as memorable as Colin Farrell was as Oz Cobb, he only had a handful of scenes in the original film, so it’s likely the same will be true regarding his role in the sequel.

As for what role that’ll be this time around, it’s up in the air. Fans’ best guesses suggest that The Batman sequel will be based off The Long Halloween. Ironically, it’s one of the few Batman stories with an ensemble of villains in which the Penguin doesn’t reveal. Though, given the events of The Penguin series, it’s likely that Colin Farrell’s character will be stepping in for Sal Maroni’s role in any potential adaptation of The Long Halloween.

The Batman sequel is currently set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, and make sure to stay tuned to our YouTube channel for more content.
